Scanadu announced,  yesterday at the WSJD Live conference in Laguna Beach, Calif., a home based lab kit that will enable consumers to check vitals and urinalysis from the comfort of their home – with mobile connectivity. The innovative solution costs a fraction of hospital based labs and provides results in only minutes.

The team demonstrated a common lab – the urinalysis – which typically requires patients to visit a physician who would then order the lab after which the patient must provide a urine specimen. The lab then processes the test, the results of which are  then printed out and given to office/clinical personnel to enter into EMR and/or inform the clinician who then notifies the patient of results. The process which can take more than 24 hours is reduced to only minutes with this home based kit.

The costs of lab equipment for a clinical practice is said to be around $3000. Of course, the cost to consumers or insurers for each test must also be considered.  The Scanadu solution allows user to order a basic kit for $199 (prices are expected to drop), and a per test price of around $2.  The cost and time savings of the innovative new solution could be substantial – not to mention the potential impacts of earlier detection of infection, kidney disease, pregnancy, or other results which will be discovered in this easy to use home based mobile diagnostic solution.

The product, described by Scanadu developers as “a portable hospital,” is expected to be available in 2015 and will include capabilities to monitor common vitals and labs. Taking telehealth and personal health records (data) to a whole new level, Scandadu will be one of the first to enter the burgeoning direct to consumer mHealth diagnostics market available to consumers in 2015. This – and other health IT innovations that are underway in telehealth, telemonitoring (and remote patient monitoring),  wearable tech, and web and mobile health tech, suggests the genie is out of the bottle and won’t be going back anytime soon. The healthcare revolution has begun.
