The Glass Team sent out a gift* to some Explorers this week and after this cup of hot chocolate (included in the package), my mug will reside in a place of honor on my bookcase, among my swag collection and badges from trade shows past.

Thank you Google Glass for an awesome adventure. An adventure that is truly just beginning.

It has been a unique experience, these 577 days. That’s one year, six months, and 29 days that much of my life has been defined by the odd, little, piece of futuristic tech on my head. Glass has somewhat defined me and my professional pursuits that I won’t get into here. But twice this week the realization hit me. I’ve written before that networking is my vocation and for the last 577 days, I have not attended a networking event without wearing Glass. Until last week.

The end of the Explorer program changes our relationship to the world and the questions asked. I loved strangers asking me about Glass. I loved letting them try them it on and waiting for the “ah ha!” moment. I don’t particularly want to answer questions about the future or, as one person said, “getting ripped off by Google.”

Let me be clear: Glass was the single best investment this geek has ever made. I would not trade the last 577 days for anything. And if I was still wearing them out, my answer would be that Glass graduating from our alpha explorations is awesome and I can’t wait for the public products to come. I love Google and the friends I’ve made both on the team and other Explorers.

I’ve now attended four events without Glass. More than four times I’ve been asked where my Google Glass is. And a couple nights ago, a friend jokingly offered his condolences on the “demise of Glass.” I’m telling you — it’s a confidence builder to realize that folks recognized me without my Glass!

So, after 577 days, many travels to New York, Washington, DC and Boston for Glass events and thousands of dollars, Google sends me a couple of nifty mugs plus I’m also looking forward to my Glass 2014 coffee table book. That book is going out to those few crazies like myself who were perhaps over active in the program.

Mugs and a picture book! If you’re reading this expecting me to be pissed, then you are not a nerd. I am thrilled. I love my exclusive Glass mug and will treasure my limited printing picture book. I am a swag collecting, Google loving nerd.

*Our understanding is that those of us who submitted photos to the Explorers 2014 thread were the only ones to receive the mug, along with a printed copy of the compilation book. I’d be interested to hear in the comments if any others have gotten a mug.
